Comment on Josephine and Napoleon by Glenn http://napoleononline.ca/2011/01/napoleon-and-josephine/#comment-5 Glenn Sat, 22 Jan 2011 21:07:56 +0000 http://napoleononline.ca/?p=269#comment-5 One of the stories of their initial meeting was that after Napoleon had become General of the Interior, he had banned all local weapons. The story goes that a young lad of twelve approached Napoleon and asked to recover a confiscated sword which had belonged to his father who had been executed during the Reign of Terror. Napoleon agreed and the boy's mother came to thank Napoleon. Who shows up but Josephine, and the rest is history... Comment on Continental System by Glenn http://napoleononline.ca/2011/01/continental-system/#comment-4 Glenn Sat, 22 Jan 2011 20:58:45 +0000 http://napoleononline.ca/?p=566#comment-4 Many historians believe that the Continental System was one of the key issues that eventually led to Napoleon's ultimate demise. It probably did more harm than good economically from an overall balance of trade perspective, and it alienated the countries that had signed up to it (albeit willingly). The Spanish ulcer was originally "opened" due to Napoleon's desire to bring Portugal into the Continental System (as it was one of the few countries with ports not under his control) and thereby needed influence over Spain to gain access to Portugal. The two biggest drains on France (militarily, politically and economically) being Russia and Spain were directly related to the attempt to enforce this economic blockade. The combination of all of these factors would not bode well for France or Napoleon.
